Morning affirmations have been a part of my life since childhood. I vividly remember sitting on a heavy brown leather couch with my mom as she introduced me to the idea of energy, and how it shapes our world. Though the abstract nature of metaphysics eluded my young mind, the idea that our thoughts influence our reality intrigued me.

From this discussion emerged a family mantra: “What you think about, you bring about.” While I grasped its essence, it wasn’t until later that I truly appreciated its power. Positive expectations seemed to magnify the beauty around me, like spotting a ladybug on a healthy leaf. Conversely, dwelling on negativity obscured these moments of joy.

Of course, life’s complexities soon revealed that positive thinking alone couldn’t shield me from hardships. Sometimes, bad things happen.

I learned that emotions are fleeting and beliefs can be guided. Morning affirmations became my anchor, a ritual empowering me to direct my thoughts and energy toward the things I wanted to prioritize.

What Are Positive Affirmations?

A bright coral post-it note on a cabinet with a morning affirmation that says, "My heart is open to giving and receiving love freely and unconditionally".

Morning affirmations are positive statements or phrases you repeat to yourself at the beginning of each day to cultivate a mindset of abundance, enhance self-belief, and combat negative thought processes.

They are designed to help you start your day with confidence, gratitude, and optimism. By consistently practicing morning affirmations, you can reprogram your subconscious mind, overcome negative thought patterns, and align your thoughts with your goals and aspirations. These affirmations can cover various aspects of life, including self-love, success, abundance, health, and happiness, depending on your preferences and the areas you want to focus on.

Here are some overarching themes to consider:

  • Goals (Life, School, Monetary)
  • Core Values (Courage, Integrity, Kindness)
  • Interests (Creativity, Travel, Health)

How To Incorporate Morning Affirmations Into Your Life

There is no perfect way to incorporate morning affirmations into your daily life. You may prefer to incorporate affirmations into your lunch break. It is a form of self-discovery. Be willing to experiment to find a method that works well for you. As is true with many things in life, it doesn’t matter what works for everyone else, take in suggestions and make them your own.

I enjoy writing my morning affirmations on a Post-it and sticking them onto a surface I see daily.

For instance, I like to put one on my bedside table, so it is the first thing I see in the morning. I have been known to put them on the bathroom mirror, work desk, walls, and refrigerators. I have a friend who puts them in her car! It is a nice daily reminder of what you want to focus on and how you spend your energy. It is easy to get swept away by the miles-long to-do list. An effective way to re-center has made a huge difference in how I approach my daily life. Particularly during the times of my life when I am struggling to see the rays of sunshine I know are trying to peak through the dark.

What Is The Science Behind Affirmations?

Positive affirmations are rooted in a psychological theory called self-affirmation theory8. Essentially, this theory suggests that by affirming positive beliefs about ourselves, we can uphold our sense of integrity and self-worth.

Self-integrity is closely tied to our confidence in ourselves — our belief in our ability to navigate moral challenges and adapt when our self-image is challenged2. As humans, we naturally strive to safeguard our self-integrity from threats.

Our brains are comprised of a multitude of varying connections. The more we repeat a certain action the easier an action becomes. The more you use negative self-talk to describe yourself in your head, the easier it is to think of yourself in a degrading way. All of us fall prey to unhelpful dark thoughts. Most of us have found ourselves at the end of dark spirals where we never feel like enough.

Combatting negative patterns becomes important when depression and anxiety are overwhelming elements in our lives. Positive daily affirmations are a wonderful anecdote. By strengthening our sense of integrity and morals with positive self-affirmations, we can help diminish negative thought highways. With time, this process can lead to enhanced self-esteem and more confidence.

The Benefits Of Self-Affirmation

Self-affirmation theory has been assessed through multiple scientific studies. One MRI study discovered that people who practiced positive affirmations showed increased brain activity in areas responsible for thinking about themselves and assigning value when they thought about their future values, compared to thinking about everyday activities. This increased brain activity was also linked to changes in sedentary behavior after a separate physical activity program, suggesting that affirmations could help motivate people to adopt healthier habits. Scientists concluded that affirmations can affect brain processes related to self-reflection and future planning, potentially enhancing their effectiveness1.

Other studies have found positive affirmations can decrease health-deteriorating stress4,9. Affirmations have been linked to improved academic achievement for struggling and lonely college students6. One study also found that self-affirmation can lower stress and decrease rumination5,8.

Positive affirmations are not a magical word cocktail that will fix all of your symptoms of self-doubt, negativity, or depression. A lot of research suggests people can respond to self-affirmations differently. Just like anything in life, you have to find what works well for you.

Will Self-Affirmations Boost Self-Esteem?

Affirmations for the morning. One on a yellow post it says "I am worthy of love and deserving of all the good things that come my way. " The second post -it says "Healing is a journey. I am healing everyday."
Using affirmations to boost your self-esteem can be helpful, but there’s a catch. According to self-affirmation theory2, the key is to focus your affirmations on your core personal values. It doesn’t make much sense to repeat something to yourself if it doesn’t align with what you genuinely believe is good, moral, and meaningful. For affirmations to actually make a difference in how you feel about yourself, they should be positive and centered around actions that reinforce your sense of who you are. Identify and emphasize your real strengths or the qualities that you find important when crafting/choosing your affirmations.

Making Affirmations A Habit

Start your day with one or two of the affirmations above, and let them set the tone for a positive and fulfilling day. Remember to be gentle with yourself. Writing your positive morning affirmations down in a place where you are likely to see them will help you remember them and make repetition easier. Making a new habit stick is a process.

There are three parts to habit formation: cue, performing the habit, and reward. If you want to make morning affirmations a part of your daily routine, create a cue to remind you to think about your affirmation. For me, I journal as soon as I wake up and that is when I think of my affirmation. My cue is my alarm clock. I adore tea, so my reward is an indulgent cup of rose and lavender.

If you are like us and enjoy wearing your favorite affirmations, consider buying a piece of clothing from Santa Fe Threads. Their sustainable sweatshirts are a cozy way to wrap yourself in the words you want to focus your attention on.

Fortunately, we are all works in progress. Life would be obscenely boring if we had everything figured out. Try different morning affirmations to see which ones resonate the best for you. If you keep forgetting your affirmation, write it down and put it somewhere you will see it every day: the bathroom mirror, work laptop, the fridge, etc.
